Joint symptoms—particularly those associated with knee osteoarthritis—are among the better-studied areas of human curcumin research.

Several systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomized trials have reported improvements in selected pain, stiffness, or physical-function measures with certain curcumin or turmeric preparations compared with placebo.

However, the literature has substantial limitations.

  • Standardization levels
  • Bioavailability technologies
  • Daily amounts
  • Treatment durations
  • Comparison groups
  • Pain and function measurements

A 2022 systematic review of 15 randomized trials involving 1,670 participants found favorable short-term results for selected knee osteoarthritis outcomes, while also emphasizing low study quality and substantial heterogeneity.

More recent reviews continue to report promising results, but formulation differences remain an important issue.
